You have to give the holder a little pressure or the machine won't quite grab it. I plan on using this thing until it breaks or they stop selling film.

I will just have to keep a PC around to run the scanner, but I think Nikon might consider giving the right to work on the software to someone so that at least the drivers can be updated. Nikon is no longer actively developing scan software, and while they are supporting Vista, they are not supporting Intel based Macs very well. Only holds five slides, but holds them perfectly and it is extremely easy to load and unload. I've scanned some Velvia slides with it and so far, excellent results.

I have tried other software (Silverfast and Vuescan) but the way they cripple their software I cannot determine if there is anything to gain so I probably won't buy either. I prefer Epson's take on providing control over exposure (you have to adjust the analog gain in Nikon Scan to change the exposure it captures) but even with the fuss the Nikon does a better job.

The quality possible is just so much more than I have seen with the Coolscan V or the Epson 4990. Well all I can say is I can't believe I waited this long to buy this scanner. Nikon's software does use memory poorly though, so even a serious machine like mine is brought to its knees after several large scans. Otherwise, it is scary quick even with 6x7 negatives. Oddly enough this scanner, using Nikon Scan 4, takes longer to produce a preview than it does the actual scan. This holder uses two long rubber grabbers to hold the film, which allows even the use of canned air if necessary without the film flying off. The standard 120 holder is what I tend to use though because without the glass it is much easier to puff the dust off of the film. The ANR glass 120 holder is wonderful for curled film. They don't have the capacity that a flat bed's holders do, but they are much less fussy.

My Mac is an Early 2009 'Nehalem' Mac Pro with 12GB RAM running Mac OS X 10.6.2. Second, what software do you all recommend? I haven't tried SilverFast yet due to its unattractive pricing/upgrade policy, but will try it if others recommend it highly.įirst, are there any other alternatives I haven't considered? SilverFast is pricier ($50 for SE version, $218 for Ai IT8 version, and up) with 75%+ of retail price paid upgrades (and no upgrade discount for the SE version, apparently), and the version you but is locked to a single very limited set of devices (Nikon LS 50ED and Coolscan V ED slide scanners, in my case). I've used the VueScan demo and it works very well with my slide scanner and seems to make good-quality scans.

VueScan is less expensive ($40 for standard version with 1 year of free upgrades and $80 for the pro version with lifetime free upgrades, and supports neatly all scanners ever made.

Unfortunately, Apple's built-in Image Capture doesn't 'see' the slide scanner, although it works perfectly with my flatbed scanner. In looking for replacement software for my slide scanner, I have only found two contenders: VueScan and SilverFast. They are all family photos, and so doing this right is fairly important, but I have limited time and skill. These are all fairly old well-used slides, and so need dust/scratch removal and some color correction/restoration. I'm not a pro user I'm scanning old (early 1970s to early 1990s) color slides before they degrade too much further. The Nikon Scan 4 software hasn't been updated since 2004, in fact. I guess its been a LONG time since I've needed to scan slides. I tried to use my Nikon Coolscan V ED slide scanner over the weekend and discovered that its software doesn't work in Leopard, much less Snow Leopard.
